Since Our Challenging Spring…

While being in communication with 100’s of other gardeners, this winter and brutal spring has given us a rude wakeup call.

For the first time in my long life, dealing with living plant material, am seeing (as are almost ALL gardeners…) trees, shrubs, etc. (rated for Zone 2) dying as never before! This must be a “once-in-100-year phenomenon”. My Battleford apple, the Gold Brook plum, Pembina plum and 100’s of Hens & Chicks, as well as outdoor alpine plants hit the dust. Can’t describe the shock it gives you…

And what to do…? Maybe finally an opportunity to start over? 30 years of building…thrown to the ground! Taking a deep breath. What grueling work it is, looking at and dumping all those brown skeletons, but saving the soil within. Truthfully there were “some brutes” that needed to be removed for once and for all. Now is the time is start fresh…sadly!

Gratefully the summer has not been too bad. Rains have finally returned. Can’t believe how tough an alpine is, until you witness their will to survive. Some of my material are in beds…the rest in pots. Therein lies my challenges and that has to change. Many planting areas have been cleaned up and time to plant a good balance out. Be patient with me as it is only myself…AND it is (after all) a collectors’ hobby… Next year will be better.

Finally flipping over to a new website… My website manager, Tom has quite the job keeping my nose focused on my share of the task. (Summer here is crazy: tons of maintenance outside on this 3 acre farm yard AND lets not forget it is also berry & veggie harvest time) But still it is my job to fill in the Gallery and keep you informed of the “going ons”. Hope you enjoy it and please let me know what you think of it. Pro & Con…

Here’s to a great summer, one and all…

Happy Growing,

Mandy
